NMSS Barancik Prize for Innovation in MS Research: Call for Nominations

The Barancik Prize for Innovation in Multiple Sclerosis Research recognizes an exceptional scientist or a team of scientists whose work in MS research has demonstrated outstanding innovation and originality.

 

This annual prize, made possible by the generosity of the Charles and Margery Barancik SO Foundation, is $100,000 to be used at the discretion of the recipient.

MS TRIAL ALERT: Investigators Recruiting for Study of Oral Laquinimod in Primary-Progressive MS

Summary: Investigators at sites worldwide are recruiting 375 people with primary-progressive MS for a Phase 2 clinical trial comparing oral laquinimod (Teva Pharmaceuticals), an experimental compound that is believed to modify immune function, with inactive placebo in 375 people with primary-progressive MS.  The study is funded by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
 
Rationale: There are currently no disease-modifying therapies specifically approved for treating the primary-progressive form of MS.

MS Trial Alert: Investigators Recruiting 1200 People with Relapsing MS For Study of Oral RPC1063

Summary: Investigators worldwide are recruiting 1200 people with relapsing MS for a study testing the effectiveness of two different doses of the experimental oral therapy RPC1063 (Receptos, Inc.) versus Avonex® (interferon beta-1a, Biogen Inc.) at reducing the rate of relapses. The study, called the Sunbeam Study, is funded by Receptos, Inc.
 
Rationale: RPC1063 is a selective sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator (similar to the mode of action of Gilenya® [fingolimod, Novartis International AG]).

MS Trial Alert: Researchers Nationwide Recruiting Children and Adolescents with MS for a Global Study of Gilenya

Summary: Investigators across the U.S. and in other countries are recruiting 190 children and adolescents with MS (ages 10-17) for a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of oral fingolimod (Gilenya®, Novartis Pharmaceuticals AG) with interferon beta-1a (Avonex®, Biogen Idec) injected into the muscle. The study is funded by Novartis. The U.S.

Recruiting for Study on Employment Status in MS

Researchers at the Kessler Foundation are interested in learning more about the factors associated with employment decisions in MS. They are recruiting individuals with MS who are gainfully employed. In particular, they are looking for people who are considering leaving the workforce or feeling as if they need to cut back on hours. All participants will complete an online survey asking about their work status and various factors thought to be related to managing one’s MS and ability to work.

 

National MS Society: Help Needed to Encourage U.S. Senate to Support Record Funding for MS Research in Department of Defense

With support from MS activists, in June, the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to an amendment that would double MS research funding for Fiscal Year 2015 in the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP).

MS Trial Alert: Researchers in California, Colorado, New Mexico and Pennsylvania Recruiting Women with Progressive or Relapsing MS for Study of Estriol to Improve Cognition

Summary: Investigators in California, Colorado, New Mexico and Pennsylvania are recruiting 64 women with MS relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, or primary-progressive for a 12-month study in which the sex hormone estriol will be compared with inactive placebo for effects on cognitive function. Participants can remain on their prescribed MS medication throughout the study. Rhonda Voskuhl, MD (University of California at Los Angeles) is the principal investigator of the trial.

Researchers Recruiting For Study Of Blood Test That May Help To Diagnose And Monitor MS

Summary: Investigators are recruiting 100 individuals who are being evaluated for symptoms of MS or other neurological diseases for a study to determine the effectiveness of a new blood-based diagnostic test for MS. The study is funded by DioGenix, Inc., in partnership with the National MS Society through Fast Forward.

ONLINE STUDY LOOKING AT EMOTION REGULATION IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

 
The Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory at Ohio State University is looking for individuals with multiple sclerosis to participate in an online study examining relations between emotion regulation and quality of life in individuals with MS. The online study involves filling out a set of questionnaires and making subjective ratings about emotion-eliciting photos.
