Human postmortem tissue from people with multiple sclerosis.
Control tissue can be requested from the Australian brain bank network "Using Our Brains" program.
Sample-processing information
Consented tissue is retrieved and preserved as rapidly as possible (within 24 hours) after death and stored together with the donor’s medical history.
Data available for each sample
Donors' medical history.
Quantity of available samples
Not specified.
Who can request samples
Interested researchers with appropriate ethics approval.
Cost
Investigators are not charged for tissue samples but are asked to contribute costs related to tissue shipping, handling, and processing.
How to request samples
Complete and return the “MS Researcher Expression of Interest Form” (available from their website) to msrabrainbank@msra.org.au. Following a discussion about research requirements and subject to appropriate ethics approval, applicants will be forwarded a Tissue Request Application and Tissue Transfer Agreement. The Tissue Transfer Agreement must be signed by the investigator as well as a legal representative of the investigator's university or organization before approved tissue can be released. These forms should be completed and returned to the ABBN, which will refer the request to the appropriate Brain Bank Scientific Advisory Committee for review and approval.
The outcome of the review process is based on the availability of the material and scientific merit of the project. The review process takes approximately 4 weeks. If your application is approved, you will be informed about the subsequent procedure for obtaining the requested samples.
Requirements associated with sample use
Not specified.
Ongoing sample collection?
Yes. The organization has an active brain donation program.
